Booker T. Washington Papers at the History Cooperative -- "A project of the American Historical Association (AHA), the Organization of American Historians (OAH), the University of Illinois Press, and the National Academy Press, this site currently offers free, full-text access to recent issues of the _American Historical Review_ and the _Journal of American History_. In the near future, access will be restricted to members of the AHA and OAH, and to institutions that subscribe to the print versions. The site also hosts two special features that will remain free to all. The first is a multimedia essay, "Los Angeles and the Problem of Urban Historical Knowledge," which employs animated maps, photos, and other visual materials. The second is a searchable online version of the fourteen-volume _Booker T. Washington Papers_ originally published by the University of Illinois Press. The volumes are presented in an adapted version of the National Academy Press's Open Book framework and may be easily browsed, printed, and searched down to the page level. K-12 History on the Internet Resource Guide -- from a history professor and an information technology professional, this large site has loads of information for history teachers. Look here for online history projects (by students and teachers, for students and teachers) for grades K through 16, as well as professional literature for teachers at all levels. Also included are sections on professional development, doing research, and a "Time and Place& Social Studies Web Ring... a voluntary association of social studies oriented web sites. They may be index sites, collections of lesson plans or other sites useful to social studies educators and/or students" (this last is still under construction). Malcolm X Conference (Real Player) -- "On November 1-4, 1990, over 3,000 people from 24 countries met in New York City for a conference entitled, Malcolm X: Radical Tradition and
a Legacy of Struggle. The conference marked the last time that "major figures such as Alex Haley, John Henry Clarke, Betty Shabazz, and C. Eric Lincoln gathered together." The University of Toledo Africana Studies Program, under the direction of Dr. Abdul Alkalimat, has begun to place online the full audio proceedings of the conference, accompanied by study guides and links to further information. Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) -- "...mission: to make a difference in the quality of education and learning for all through excellence in applied research, product development, and service," includes educator resources, programs, projects, and the latest news about educational technology. Missouri Bar Association Online -- although this acts as a source of information for the legal profession in Missouri, it offers online pamphlets, teacher resources, a video lending library, and a newsletter (subscription is available online). URL: http://www.mobar.org/

Missouri State Historic Sites Locator Map -- uses an interactive map of Missouri as a key to text descriptions of various landmarks in state history. URL: http://www.mostateparks.com/statemap.htm

National Archives and Records Administration and the NARA's Digital Classroom -- To encourage teachers of students at all levels to use archival documents in the classroom, the Digital Classroom provides materials from the National Archives and methods for teaching with primary sources. Includes sections on Primary Sources and Activities, General and National History Day Research, NARA Publications, and Professional Development opportunities for educators at all levels.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards -- "The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards works to strengthen the teaching profession and to improve student learning in America's schools... by establishing high standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do, and we are developing a new system of advanced, voluntary certification for teachers. National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center (Flash) -- "Sponsored by the White House Council on Youth Violence, the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center is a collaboration between the Council, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other federal agencies. The Resource Center Website is offered as a portal to federal information on youth violence prevention and suicide. The heart of the site is a sizable collection of annotated links, organized alphabetically by topic. The site also explores a number of "Hot Topics," such as Youth Suicide, After School Programs, and Intimate Partner and Family Violence, with background and overviews, publications, and annotated links. Recommended Readings on the Ancient Near East -- Research Archives of the Oriental Institute at the University of Chicago has posted an updated version of its 1996 printed "Guide to Introductory Readings on the Peoples and Cultures of the Ancient Near East." Resources are grouped under three general headings: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Nubia, and Ancient Mesopotamia. Each heading contains a list of general reference works. Educause -- "...a nonprofit consortium of higher education institutions that facilitates the introduction, use, and access to and management of information resources in teaching, learning, scholarship, and research. HistoryLink: The Online Encyclopedia of Seattle and King County -- this site's concept could be adapted by any teacher or team of educators who were interested in creating an online history of any place, especially their own home town. Here is how the Internet Scout Report describes it: "HistoryLink is an Internet experiment in doing local history for Seattle, Washington that could be replicated in other urban areas. First imagined by Walt Crowley and Paul Dorpat as a print history of Seattle and King County, HistoryLink became a Web venture as its founders sought a method "which would combine multiple histories including the story of women, labor, ethnic minorities, the environment and other subjects often marginalized in comprehensive printed histories." Internet Scout Report -- one of the absolute BEST SOURCES of information for teachers at the secondary and post-secondary level, this is one of Mr. Whitney's favorite resources for interesting and useful and informative Web sites. Get yourself a subscription..... as of the spring of 2001, it's still a free email newsletter.

Learning Exchange for Teachers and Students through the InterNet -- The mission of the site is "... to facilitate an integration of the Internet into the K-12 curriculum, and features lesson plans on topics from Ellis Island to the Worm Bin Project to Architectural Landscapes. Visitors can choose from a range of access options including 10 Big Ideas, Subjects, and Teachers. Lessons are clearly organized within the general subjects; links to specific topics are also provided." Includes real-world examples from practicing teachers. New York Times Learning Network -- some really terrific resources for social studies teachers, including a daily news quiz, keyword-searchable lesson plan archive organized by category with related articles from the Times and related articles for further investigation, even have a lesson plan emailed to you via free "subscription" in a newsletter format.
