Since the end of World War II in the 1940s, and with the installation of millions of air conditioning systems in homes, office buildings and automobiles across the Sun Belt, more and more people have moved into that area of the U.S.  From Virginia south to Florida, then west to Arizona and southern California, and even into the Rocky Mountain States, there has been a continuing shift in the population from the North to the South and West.
The sections of the country that people are moving to have traditionally been the most conservative.  Some would call a great deal of this rural area backwards, reactionary even.  People in these areas have always been averse to change, and hold to the traditional ways of doing things.  This population shift has had an enormous impact on the character of our national politics.  As the population of these conservative areas has grown, their membership in the House of Representatives has grown, as well.  Meanwhile, the population of the more moderate-to-liberal North has not grown as fast, resulting in a loss of House membership for those Northern states.  The result has been a tremendous increase in the power of conservative forces in our national legislature.

Here are examples of what we’ve been discussing.  The Democratic and Republican parties are considered broker parties, because they are willing to make deals in order to get votes.  That’s what brokers do – they make deals and hope to work things out for the better, to get people to go along with what they want to do.  The Nazis and the Communists, on the other hand, have that missionary zeal to win converts more than they’re interested in winning elections.  Thus, they’re referred to as missionary parties.
