WHAT’S YOUR IDEOLOGY?

 

Directions:  This  assignment asks you to take self-surveys online that will allow you to have a better idea what your political views are, to figure out which of the current presidential  candidates you might prefer to vote for, and to discover which of the current political parties you might be interested in affiliating yourself with.

 

Part 1:  Where Do You Fit? 

Read the two-paragraph introduction to the “Where Do You Fit?” self self-survey online at http://people-press.org/fit/ .  Click on the “Where Do You Fit?” hyperlink and answer the questions on the typology questionnaire online to find out which political typology group you fit into.  When you have completed taking this survey, click on “Calculate my results!.  Read the description of your political typology carefully, then answer the questions below.

Part 2:  VoteMatch Quiz

Take the VoteMatch quiz online at http://www.speakout.com/VoteMatch/senate2006.asp?quiz=2008 .  Be sure you follow these directions.  Make certain that the radio button located next to “2008 Presidential speculation” is checked (with a black dot).  Leave the drop-down menu alone – it should be set to read “Select Senate race.”  Then click on the tab that reads “Individual Rights” and begin taking the VoteMatch quiz on your own.  As you complete a tabbed section, go on to the next one – from “Individual Rights” through “Candidate Ranking” to get the results of your survey.  On the page that shows your survey results, there should be one presidential candidate whose views on social and economic issues match up with yours at least fairly closely.  Click on the hyperlink titled “Social” to the left of the candidate whose name appears above the rest, and read over how well your views and that candidate’s views match.  Repeat this process using the hyperlink titled “Economic.”  At the end of the list of candidates and the explanation of how well their stand on the issues matches your own, find the statement next to the radio button that is titled “Your political philosophy is” – your ideology should show up here as “liberal” or “conservative” or “populist” or “libertarian,” or some combination of those terms, even.  Click on the hyperlink to the right of “Your political philosophy is” that is titled “analysis and explanation.”  Read this thoroughly and completely, and be prepared to discuss in class with your instructor and classmates.  Please answer the questions regarding the VoteMatch Quiz and your results, below.

Read “Welcome to the Political Compass” at http://www.politicalcompass.org/ before you go any farther on this assignment.  This is important, as your ability to understand the results of this self-survey will be greatly enhanced through, first, reading this page.  After you’ve finished reading the Welcome page, "Take the Test."   When you have completed the "Test" and see your results, click on "Show graph on separate page for printing."  Print out your personal results graph, write your name on it, and staple it together with the rest of your work, today, with this handout on top.  (Be smart:  copy/paste the graph image into a Word document, then print out just the single sheet with “Political Compass” typed in as a title!)

No matter if you are a "conservative" or a "liberal" or.... whatever... you will want to read this one, it's really fascinating stuff!
